Modern life makes it surprisingly easy to go through an entire day without much physical activity. You can drive to work, sit at a desk, order food from your phone, watch television at night, and repeat the process the next day.

But what actually happens to your body when you rarely—or never—exercise?

A sedentary lifestyle affects far more than body weight. Over time, physical inactivity can influence your muscles, cardiovascular system, blood sugar regulation, bones, mobility, mental health, and overall risk of chronic disease.

Because movement feels harder, you become even less likely to do it.

Eventually, ordinary tasks may require a larger percentage of your physical capacity.

Someone could technically complete a workout in the morning and still spend most of the remaining day sitting.

Research has found associations between high amounts of sedentary time and several negative health outcomes.

An analysis of 47 studies found prolonged sedentary time was independently associated with greater risks of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Importantly, the associations tended to be stronger among people with lower levels of physical activity.

A separate dose-response meta-analysis involving more than 1.3 million participants also found associations between sedentary behavior and several major chronic disease outcomes, with higher amounts of sitting generally carrying greater risks.

The practical takeaway isn't that sitting is inherently dangerous.

It's that large amounts of sedentary time combined with very little physical activity aren't an ideal combination for long-term health.

8. Your Mental Health May Be Affected

Exercise affects your brain as well as your body.

Regular physical activity is associated with improvements in mental health, sleep, cognition, and overall well-being.

WHO reports that regular physical activity can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, enhance brain health, and improve overall well-being.

Some benefits can occur surprisingly quickly.

Exercise isn't a replacement for appropriate mental healthcare when it is needed, but regular movement can be one valuable component of maintaining both physical and mental health.

9. Your Risk of Chronic Disease Increases

Perhaps the biggest consequence of long-term physical inactivity isn't something you immediately feel.

It's the gradual increase in your risk of chronic disease.

Evidence links insufficient physical activity and excessive sedentary behavior with increased risks of several major health problems, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Certain cancers
  • Depression
  • Functional decline
  • Premature mortality

WHO describes physical inactivity as one of the leading risk factors for mortality from noncommunicable diseases.

An overview of systematic reviews similarly found strong evidence connecting sedentary behavior in adults with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

This doesn't mean that inactivity guarantees someone will develop a disease. Disease risk is influenced by genetics, age, nutrition, smoking, alcohol use, sleep, environmental factors, medical history, and many other variables.

Instead, physical activity should be viewed as one major modifiable factor that can influence long-term health risk.

10. Aging Can Magnify the Consequences of Inactivity

The effects of inactivity become particularly important as we get older.

Aging naturally brings changes in muscle mass, strength, aerobic capacity, balance, and bone health. If someone is already physically inactive, these changes can make maintaining physical function more difficult.

Think of fitness as a reserve.

Building and maintaining:

  • Strength
  • Muscle
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Balance
  • Mobility

gives your body more capacity to work with as you age.

This is one reason exercise shouldn't be viewed simply as something you do to look better.

  3. Beginning basic resistance training
  4. Gradually increasing cardiovascular exercise
  5. Progressing toward approximately 150 minutes of moderate activity each week
  6. Performing strength training at least twice per week

You don't need to become an athlete.

You need to give your body a reason to maintain its physical abilities.

The Bottom Line: Your Body Adapts to What You Ask It to Do

The human body is remarkably adaptable.
