Is Strength Training Really
More Important Than Cardio?
Not exactly. Strength and cardiovascular exercise create different adaptations—and long-term health is best served by both.
Walk into almost any gym and you will see two very different approaches to exercise.
Some people head straight for the treadmill, bike, or elliptical. Others rarely leave the weight room.
This has fueled one of the most common debates in fitness: Is strength training more important than cardio?
Strength training and cardiovascular exercise create different adaptations in the body, and both are associated with significant long-term health benefits. The better question may be: How can you combine strength training and cardio effectively?
What Is the Difference Between Strength Training and Cardio?
Strength Training
Strength training—also called resistance training or weight training—requires your muscles to produce force against resistance.

- Weight machines
- Resistance bands
- Cable machines
- Bodyweight exercises
- Other external resistance
Over time, properly programmed resistance exercise can improve muscular strength, muscle size, power, and physical function. The American College of Sports Medicine’s updated 2026 position stand synthesized 137 systematic reviews covering more than 30,000 participants and found improvements in strength, hypertrophy, power, endurance, balance, and physical function.
Cardiovascular Exercise
Cardiovascular or aerobic exercise generally involves sustained activity that challenges your heart, lungs, circulatory system, and working muscles.

- Stair climbing
- Aerobic classes
Regular aerobic exercise can improve cardiorespiratory fitness, often measured through indicators such as VO₂ max or aerobic capacity.
Both forms of exercise improve fitness—but they do not improve the same aspects of fitness to the same degree.
Why Strength Training Is So Important for Your Health
1. It Helps Preserve Muscle Mass
One of the biggest reasons to perform resistance training has little to do with bodybuilding. It is about maintaining your ability to physically function throughout your life.
Muscle mass and strength can decline as we age, particularly when we are inactive. Maintaining strength makes carrying groceries, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair, lifting from the floor, playing sports, and preserving independence easier.
2. It Is Associated With Lower Mortality Risk
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that, compared with no resistance training, participation was associated with approximately:

These findings are largely observational and cannot prove that resistance training alone caused the reductions. They do add to the evidence that muscle-strengthening exercise belongs in a comprehensive health program.
3. It Helps Maintain Physical Function
Standing, walking, lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing stairs, and getting off the ground all require your muscular system to generate force. For healthy aging, maintaining strength may be one of the most important reasons to exercise.
4. It Can Support Bone and Musculoskeletal Health
Bones, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues are exposed to mechanical loading during resistance training. A properly designed program can therefore support overall musculoskeletal health, mobility, and independence.
5. It Can Improve Body Composition
Weight loss and fat loss are not exactly the same. Resistance training provides a stimulus for maintaining or building skeletal muscle while body fat is reduced.

But Cardio Is Extremely Important Too
With all the recent attention given to strength training, it is easy to swing too far in the opposite direction. Cardio is not outdated, and lifting weights does not automatically eliminate the need for aerobic exercise.
1. Cardio Builds Cardiorespiratory Fitness
Aerobic exercise improves your body’s ability to deliver and use oxygen. A meta-analysis involving more than 170,000 participants found that every 1-MET higher estimated cardiorespiratory fitness level was associated with approximately 17% lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.
2. It Is Important for Cardiovascular Health
Training your chest, back, and legs with weights is not identical to challenging the cardiovascular system through sustained aerobic exercise. Brisk walking, cycling, running, swimming, and rowing place ongoing demands on oxygen delivery and circulation.
3. It Can Increase Energy Expenditure
Cardiovascular activity requires energy and can contribute to greater daily energy expenditure. But it should not simply be used to “burn off” food. Sustainable fat loss also depends on nutrition, resistance training, sleep, recovery, and everyday activity.
4. Aerobic Fitness Makes Everyday Life Easier
Cardiovascular fitness affects how easily you can walk long distances, climb stairs, hike, travel, work physically, play with your children, and recover between demanding activities.
Someone can be very strong and still become exhausted climbing stairs. Someone can have excellent endurance but lack strength. A well-rounded body should possess both.
So, Is Strength Training Better Than Cardio?
There is no clear winner.
A systematic review and meta-analysis involving more than 370,000 participants found resistance training was associated with a 21% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared with no exercise. When resistance training was combined with aerobic exercise, the association was stronger: approximately a 40% lower risk.
Observational research cannot establish that exercise alone caused the entire difference, but the pattern is important.
What Does the Research Say About Combining Them?
A large 2023 JAMA Internal Medicine cohort study of more than 500,000 adults found that balanced combinations of aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity were associated with lower mortality risk.
That is consistent with World Health Organization recommendations for adults:
AEROBIC EXERCISE
150–300minutes of moderate activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent combination.
STRENGTH TRAINING
2+ daysper week of muscle-strengthening activity involving all major muscle groups.
The recommendation is not cardio or strength training. It is cardio and strength training.
Which Is Better for Different Goals?
The answer changes depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

Asking which exercise is “better” without defining the goal can be misleading.
What If You Only Have Time for One?
If you currently exercise zero days per week, the most important step is not finding the theoretically perfect program. It is starting.
If you enjoy walking but hate lifting, start walking. If you love strength training but hate running, start lifting. You can gradually add the missing component later.
Consistency beats the perfect program you never follow.
Do You Have to Run to Get Your Cardio?
Absolutely not.
Cardio can include brisk or incline walking, cycling, swimming, rowing, hiking, elliptical training, stair climbing, and recreational sports. The appropriate intensity depends on your fitness, goals, health history, and training program.
For many people, increasing daily walking while performing structured strength training is an excellent starting point.
Does Lifting Weights Count as Cardio?
Circuit training, supersets, higher repetitions, and short rest periods can significantly increase your heart rate. That does not necessarily mean resistance training produces the same adaptations as dedicated aerobic exercise.
Likewise, running hills may strengthen your legs, but it does not replace progressive resistance training when the primary goal is maximal strength or hypertrophy.
How Much Strength Training and Cardio Should You Do?
There is no perfect prescription for everyone. Your ideal program depends on age, current fitness, training experience, health history, injuries, goals, available time, and recovery capacity.
For general health, work toward established activity recommendations while keeping the program realistic. One person might strength train 2–4 days per week while accumulating aerobic activity through walking, cycling, or jogging.
A person focused on muscle may emphasize resistance training while maintaining cardiovascular activity. An endurance athlete may do considerably more aerobic work while using strength training to support resilience.
Your exercise program should reflect your goals rather than someone else’s routine.
The Often-Ignored Third Category: Daily Movement
You can exercise for an hour and still spend most of your day sitting. Walking, taking stairs, doing household tasks, standing, and generally moving contribute to total physical activity.
The World Health Organization recommends limiting sedentary time and emphasizes that all physical activity counts. Your weekly exercise program should not be viewed in isolation.
Is Strength Training More Important as You Get Older?
Strength training can become particularly valuable with age because muscle, strength, balance, and physical function become increasingly important. But cardiovascular fitness remains relevant.

Being able to deadlift a heavy weight is useful. Walking several miles without exhaustion is useful. Getting off the floor and climbing stairs easily are useful. Fitness is not one number.
The Bottom Line: Strength Training vs. Cardio Is the Wrong Debate
For most people seeking better long-term health, strength training is probably not more important than cardio. Strength training provides benefits cardio cannot completely replace, and cardiovascular exercise provides benefits strength training cannot completely replace.
Instead of asking, “Should I lift weights or do cardio?” consider asking, “How can I become stronger while also improving my cardiovascular fitness?”
